Cindy Sherman, Untitled #565
2016, Dye sublimation metal print
Christie's, London
Settled
Cindy Sherman is one of the most influential photographers alive, famous for starring in her own images while never really showing herself. Her Untitled Film Stills of the late 1970s made her a star, and she has shape-shifted through clowns, society ladies and horror figures ever since. This 2016 work belongs to her recent series of ageing Hollywood-style divas, where she plays a faded screen goddess with both glamour and bite. It is a large dye sublimation metal print, number one from an edition of six, and examples from the series have been shown at The Broad in Los Angeles and Hauser and Wirth. The estimate of 40,000 to 60,000 pounds sits in the middle of where her big recent photographs tend to sell.
